How I Built Afghanlist — Afghanistan's #1 Free Business Directory for Afghans Worldwide
I built Afghanlist (afghanlist.com) to give every Afghan-owned business a free, searchable online presence — in Afghanistan and across the global diaspora. Here is what it does, how I built it, and why it matters.

Every Afghan entrepreneur deserves a digital home. Whether you run a clothing shop in Kabul, an IT academy in Kandahar, or a consulting firm in London — your business should be easy to find online. That is exactly why I built Afghanlist, Afghanistan's number one free business directory for Afghans inside the country and across the globe.
In this article, I walk you through what Afghanlist is, who it serves, how I built it, and why it matters to the Afghan business community.

What Is Afghanlist?
Afghanlist is a free online business directory dedicated entirely to Afghan-owned businesses. It connects Afghan entrepreneurs, service providers, and companies with customers who are actively searching for trusted businesses — by category, city, province, or country.
The platform serves two main groups of users:
- Business owners who want to list their company online and reach more customers — for free.
- Customers and visitors who want to discover reliable Afghan businesses, whether they are located in Afghanistan or anywhere in the world.
Afghanlist covers businesses in Afghanistan and in diaspora communities across the UK, Germany, Canada, the United States, Australia, and beyond. It supports listings in English, Pashto, and Dari, making it genuinely accessible to the Afghan community wherever they live.
Why Afghanistan Needed a Dedicated Business Directory
Before Afghanlist, Afghan business owners had limited options for getting found online. General directories like Google Maps or Yelp do not serve the Afghan market well. Local social media groups are scattered and unorganized. Word of mouth still drives most referrals — but it does not scale.
Meanwhile, millions of Afghans living abroad desperately want to find Afghan-owned restaurants, tailors, travel agents, tutors, and service providers in their own cities. They want to support their community, but they have no central place to look.
Afghanlist solves exactly this problem. It gives every Afghan business — large or small, local or international — a professional, searchable online presence at zero cost.
Key Features of Afghanlist

Any Afghan business owner can submit their listing directly. Add your name, description, location, category, and logo — once approved, your listing goes live and becomes discoverable.
Smart search & filtering
Visitors search by keyword, city, province, category, or country — whether they need a productivity tool in Kabul or traditional clothing in Kandahar.
Province-based browse
Listings are organized by Afghan province so users can explore businesses in Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, and other regions at a glance.
Verified reviews
Real customers leave real reviews on each listing — building trust in a community where reputation matters deeply.

Additional capabilities include a curated category system (from Afghan Traditional Clothing & Textiles to Productivity Tools, Education, and Food Production), bilingual and RTL support for Pashto and Dari content, and a Global section for Afghan-owned businesses anywhere in the world.
Tech Stack: How I Built Afghanlist
Afghanlist is a modern, full-stack web application built with performance, scalability, and user experience at the core.
- Backend: Node.js — a fast, non-blocking architecture that handles concurrent search requests efficiently.
- Frontend: Next.js — server-side rendering and static generation so every business listing page loads fast and is fully indexable by search engines.
- Styling: Tailwind CSS — a clean, responsive design system from the homepage hero to individual business cards and category pages.
I integrated supporting libraries for image optimization, form validation, database queries, authentication, and admin management — all chosen for reliability and production readiness. The layout adapts naturally on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

Current Listings on Afghanlist
Since launch, Afghanlist has grown to include businesses across multiple provinces and categories. Some early listings include:
- AsliTools — a free online file converter tool based in Kabul, listed under Productivity Tools.
- Hamidi Clothes Fashion — an Afghan traditional clothing brand in Kabul, listed under Afghan Traditional Clothing & Textiles.
- Varin SkillUp Academy — a leading educational and professional training institute in Kabul offering programs in languages, IT, and professional certifications.
- Khadam Baryal Food Production Company — a raw materials and food production company based in Kandahar, operating in Pashto.
These early adopters represent the diversity of Afghan business — from digital tools to fashion, education to food production. This diversity is exactly what makes Afghanlist valuable.
Why I Built This
As a web developer based in Kabul, I work with Afghan businesses every day. I see firsthand how hard it is for local businesses to build a digital presence, and how hard it is for Afghan customers — especially in the diaspora — to find trusted services from their own community.
Afghanlist addresses both sides of that problem simultaneously. It gives businesses a free, professional listing they can share on social media, WhatsApp, and with their customers. It gives searchers a trusted, organized directory they can rely on.
Afghan businesses deserve world-class digital infrastructure. Afghanlist is my contribution toward that goal.
